Things to Do in Gran Canaria: What Is Worth Booking, What You Can Do Alone, and What It Costs

By the Moris Insider team·7 October 2026·8 min read

On Gran Canaria the big sights cost nothing; you only book what needs a boat, a driver or a guide. The Maspalomas dunes, Teror and Agaete are free to visit. For Roque Nublo, a free reservation has been compulsory between 9 am and 5 pm since February 2025, which is trap number one. Booking ahead pays off for the dolphin trip (€37 to €38) and for the day tour from Las Palmas (from €48). Every figure on this page was read on 6 October 2026 on the operator's or the authority's own page.

The essentials in six numbers

Search for things to do in Gran Canaria and you land on lists of twenty places or on booking pages with more than 430 offers. Rarely on the answer that matters before you pay: what do you really have to book? All prices are "from" prices in euros, read on 6 October 2026. To check that Gran Canaria is the right island, see our comparison of the Canary Islands.

What to book, what to do on your own

The third column of the table decides: almost everything free needs no booking, with one exception, Roque Nublo.

The Maspalomas dunes: free, only the camel ride is booked

The dunes are the one place you do not have to book. It is a nature reserve of about 400 hectares, and entry is free according to the Canary Islands tourism board. The rules fit in three lines: stay on the marked paths, take nothing away, build no stone piles.

Only the camel ride is booked. The operator, Camello Safari, lists €18 per adult and €13 per child aged 3 to 12 on its website, 30 to 35 minutes, departures daily from 9:15 am to 2:15 pm, at Calle Oceanía near the Charca. The booking page also says "from €18" for 30 minutes. Price will not settle it: choose by language and by the cancellation terms written on each page.

Roque Nublo and Pico de las Nieves: no access without a reservation

Roque Nublo is a basalt rock about 80 m tall, standing at 1,813 m (Wikipedia); Pico de las Nieves, 1,949 m, is traditionally counted as the island's highest point. Since 3 February 2025, access to Roque Nublo has been regulated: to go up between 9 am and 5 pm you need a free reservation on reservasroquenublo.com; the press reports 60 places per hour and a QR code. The official site requires the prior reservation, blocks it during a wildfire alert and advises checking the weather.

The car park at Degollada de la Goleta, the old starting point, no longer exists. You park in Tejeda or at Cruz de los Llanos and take the Global shuttle, line 18: according to the official timetable it stops at Roque Nublo about every 30 minutes, from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm. Allow 10 minutes from Cruz de los Llanos, then a 1.5 km walk, about 30 minutes each way (Live it up, Las Palmas, December 2025). For when the high ground is usually clear, see our guide to the weather in the Canary Islands.

The alternative with nothing to organise is the day trip from Las Palmas: 7.5 hours with Pico de las Nieves, Roque Nublo, Cruz de Tejeda and Teror, from €48, 4.7 out of 5 from 1,270 reviews. The page states pick-up included, a guide in English and Spanish and a minimum age of 5. It does not say how long the stop at Roque Nublo lasts or whether you walk to the foot of the rock: ask before you pay. See the full-day trip to Pico de las Nieves and Roque Nublo

Teror and Agaete: two villages, a market day, a harbour

Teror sits in the hills above Las Palmas. The centre around the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino is free to wander. On Sundays from 9 am to 3 pm the market fills the streets and Plaza de Sintes: about a hundred stalls of chorizo, cheese, bread and sweets (teror.es). Bus 216 leaves from San Telmo bus station in Las Palmas; in the Global PDF updated on 23 June 2025, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays have departures at 8 am, from 10 am to 5 pm and at 8 pm. Check them the day before on guaguasglobal.com.

Agaete and its harbour, Puerto de las Nieves, lie in the north-west. The "Dedo de Dios", the rock finger of older guidebooks, was destroyed in November 2005 by tropical storm Delta, so do not go looking for it. What remains are the Salinas de Agaete, three natural pools sheltered from the open sea, a few minutes' walk from the harbour. Bus 103 links Las Palmas to the harbour, from 5 am to 10 pm from San Telmo according to Global. The ferry to Tenerife leaves from the harbour, a crossing of 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes depending on the ship; for the neighbouring island, see our one-week Tenerife itinerary. For coffee, the Finca Los Castaños in the Agaete valley offers a visit and tasting from €16 (4.6 out of 5, 118 reviews).

To see the villages without a bus or a rental car there are tours: "Arucas, Teror, Firgas and Agaete" (7 to 8 hours, from €65) and the guided tour of rural villages (8 hours, from €79, 4.6 out of 5 from 817 reviews). The first has the weakest rating on the day-trip list, 4.0 from only 79 reviews: read the comments before choosing. Compare the village tours with Teror and Agaete

Boat and dolphins: prices, rules and limits

Booking ahead makes sense here: boat, seat and time are fixed. Read on 6 October 2026: dolphin and whale watching cruise, 2.5 hours, €37 to €38 (4.2 out of 5, about 3,200 reviews); catamaran from Puerto Rico with a snorkelling stop, 3.5 hours, from €38 (4.4 out of 5, more than 6,100 reviews); small-group eco trip, 3 hours, €85 (4.5 out of 5, 46 reviews); submarine from Puerto de Mogán, 40 minutes, from €38 (4.4 out of 5, more than 4,400 reviews). See the dolphin trips from Puerto Rico with prices and dates

First, nobody guarantees dolphins: in the catamaran reviews one group counts about thirty on 4 October, another none on 19 September. Second, rules apply: boats flying the yellow "Barco Azul" flag keep at least 60 m away, and swimming with dolphins is banned (Turismo de Canarias). The catamaran's swim therefore happens in a cove, separate from the search; the page says 30 to 45 minutes, shortened if the search runs long. One review says the crew speaks mostly Spanish; another warns that the boat rolls a lot.

What the booking page shows, and why book early

We opened two listings in full, the catamaran and the Roque Nublo day trip. Both show: free cancellation up to 24 hours before with a full refund; "reserve now, pay later"; duration; guide language; pick-up. The start time only appears once you choose a date. That is the practical reason to book early: you see the times for your date before committing, and you can still change your mind the day before.

About the platform itself: on Trustpilot, GetYourGuide stands at 3.9 out of 5 from 56,632 reviews on 6 October 2026, 68% of them five-star but also 19% one-star. The negative reviews mostly mention cancelled tours, refused tickets, unclear meeting points and slow refunds. Treat that as a checking instruction: on the activity you choose, read the reviews marked "verified booking" from the last few weeks. The display order is not a quality ranking: compare rating and number of reviews.

The traps and how to avoid them

  1. Roque Nublo without a reservation. It is compulsory between 9 am and 5 pm. Reserve first, or come outside that window.
  2. The wildfire alert. The reservation system is then closed: check the official alerts the day before.
  3. The wrong language. The €48 trip and the €38 catamaran state guides in English and Spanish. Check the language in the booking window.
  4. The "from" price. It is the lowest rate. For the catamaran, a no-shuttle option is cheaper; pick-up options only show once you choose a date.
  5. The cruise stop. The day trip from Las Palmas lasts 7.5 hours: keep a margin for getting back to the ship.

On your own: bus or rental car?

For Maspalomas, Las Palmas, Teror and Agaete the bus is enough: lines 216 (Teror), 103 and 130 (Puerto de las Nieves), 18 (from the Maspalomas lighthouse to Roque Nublo and Tejeda; departures from the lighthouse only at 8 am, 9 am and 3 pm per the timetable). A rental car is worth it if you want to link several villages in one day. At Roque Nublo it only helps as far as the car park, since you can no longer park at the start of the trail.

Before you pay: the checks

To see more than one island, the comparison Fuerteventura or Lanzarote prepares the next decision. On Gran Canaria itself the rule fits in one line: walk what is free, book what needs a boat, a driver or a guide.
