Crete road trip budget for 10 days: the real cost, worked out item by item

By the Moris Insider team·30 September 2026·9 min read

A ten-day road trip in Crete costs two people, excluding flights, about €1,781 to €3,379. That is not a per-day average but a calculation on a real route: three nights in the east, six in Chania, arriving and leaving from Heraklion, 946 kilometres. And the calculation shows something most money-saving tips miss: the car and fuel make up only 17 to 24 per cent of the total. The savings are in the bed and on the plate – and in a few places you need to know about, such as a tourist tax that hits the cheap apartment hardest.

The route we costed

Most budgets for Crete work with a daily rate. The problem is that a day in Chania does not cost the same as a day on the boat to Spinalonga. So we took a real route and costed each item separately, for two people, ten days, nine nights. Flights are not included: they depend too much on where you fly from.

The route follows what we recommend in our other Crete articles. Arrive in Heraklion, where most flights land. Three nights in the east, in Agios Nikolaos: the east is twice as close to the airport as the west, as we explain in East or West Crete. From there, Spinalonga via Elounda and a day in Sitia. Then on to Chania via Knossos, for six nights at a single base, as in our one-week western Crete itinerary: Balos, Elafonisi, the Samaria Gorge, Rethymno. On the last day, back to Heraklion.

That adds up to 946 kilometres by car. The Samaria Gorge is done by bus, not by car: the trail ends in a village with no road.

The result: what ten days for two cost

Three budgets, same route. Tight: spring or autumn, a rental apartment, gyros for lunch, a simple taverna at night. Mid-range: early summer, a 3-star hotel. Comfort: July or August, a 4-star hotel, wine and fish.

The most important line is not in the table; you have to work it out. The car and fuel account for 17 to 24% of the trip. The bed and the plate, by contrast, 62 to 75%. Saving on the car – taking the bus, say – is saving in the wrong place: you lose half the island to gain a few hundred euros.

Car and fuel: less than a quarter

A hire car in Crete costs on average about €30 a day in spring and autumn, up to €46 in July, according to the monthly averages published by the comparison site Localrent. In January, €27. In August the fleet is 83% booked: prices climb and the good cars go. In summer, book early and compare Crete’s local rental firms: the island’s small firms are often cheaper than the big brands at the airport, and you usually pay only a 15 to 20% deposit up front.

For fuel we assume a small car and 6 litres per 100 kilometres, a cautious figure for mountain roads. 946 kilometres is then about 57 litres. The Greek average for unleaded 95 was €2.197 a litre in the week of 21 September 2026; on the islands it is often a few cents more. At €2.20 we reach €125 for the whole trip. Less than one night in a mid-range hotel.

One place where you could save with the car, and should not: Balos. Driving the dirt track in a hire car instead of taking the boat from Kissamos saves two people about €45. The catch is that no rental insurance covers that track. One tyre, one sump, and the saving is gone. The details are in our article on the best beaches in Crete.

Accommodation: where the budget is decided

A simple hotel in Crete costs about €60 to €80 per room per night in 2026, a mid-range hotel €120 to €150. Over nine nights it is by far the biggest item: €630 on a tight budget, €1,350 in comfort. The gap between them, €720, is more than the car costs for the whole trip.

On top comes a fee many people only discover at check-in: the climate resilience fee, per room per night, from April to October. €5 in a 3-star hotel, €10 in a 4-star. And €8 in a short-term rental. That is the paradox: the apartment you book to save money pays more fee than the 3-star hotel. Over nine nights, a difference of €27. No reason to give up the apartment – but a reason to compare prices including the fee, not without it.

The second lever is location. A base with its own parking just outside Chania’s old town saves the daily hunt for a space and the car park fees. The neighbourhoods that suit are in Where to stay in Crete.

Eating: gyros at lunch, taverna at night

Crete is not an expensive island to eat on, if you know where. A pita gyros costs €3 to €5 and keeps you going all afternoon. A main course in a simple taverna costs €10 to €15, a beer €2.50 to €4.50, a glass of house wine €4 to €8. Fish and sea-view restaurants are well above that: €20 to €25 for a plate of fresh fish.

We allow €20 per person per day on a tight budget: supermarket breakfast, gyros at lunch, a taverna at night with shared starters. With €35 you eat out comfortably twice a day. With €55, add wine, fish and a drink on the harbour. The biggest lever is simple: inland tavernas are cheaper, and often better, than those on Chania’s harbour.

Sights, boats, buses: €254 for two

The outings on our route cost two people about €254. Knossos: €20 per person, the same price all year in 2026 – the half-price winter rate is gone. Buy the ticket on the official site hhticket.gr, not from a reseller. And if you are under 25 and an EU citizen, entry to state archaeological sites is free with ID, at Knossos and at Spinalonga alike. For a young couple, that is €80 less.

Spinalonga is paid twice, at two counters: the boat from Elounda (about €14) and entry to the island (about €20). For two, €68. Balos by boat from Kissamos: €20 to €30 per person; we count €25. Elafonisi: just the car park, about €5 for the day.

Yet the most expensive day is not Knossos but the Samaria Gorge: the ticket (€10 according to 2026 guides), the morning bus to Omalos (about €10), the boat from Agia Roumeli (€17), the bus back from Chora Sfakion (about €8.30). For two, about €91. Why you still should not do that day by car is explained in our Samaria Gorge hike guide.

Five ways to spend less without missing the best

1. Travel in May, June or late September. The car costs a third less than in July, and hotels follow the same curve. 2. Compare accommodation including the fee. €8 a night in an apartment, €5 in a 3-star hotel. 3. Gyros at lunch, an inland taverna at night. It halves the food bill. 4. Under 25 and from the EU? Bring your ID. Knossos and Spinalonga are then free. 5. Do not save on the car, save on nights in expensive hotels. The car is the smallest of the big items – and the one the trip cannot work without.

And add 10% at the end for the unexpected: a car park in Chania, a sunbed, an ice cream. With these figures in mind, the road trip is no longer a gamble but a plan.
