Hiring a car in Andalusia costs, from Málaga, between €19 a day in January and €36 in July on the monthly average; at the airport, the big brands showed starting prices from €30.94 on 6 October 2026. When you book through Localrent you pay only a 15 to 20% advance, the rest at the key handover, and you should check before paying whether a credit card and a deposit are required. The first trap is not the price but the old town: in Granada, cameras and bollards close whole districts, and at the pump the fuel level written in the contract is what counts. Here is what to check before you pay.
The essentials
- €19 to €36 a day on the monthly average from Málaga (Localrent); big brands at the airport from €30.94 (ADAC, no dates).
- 15 to 20% advance, the rest at the handover; free cancellation up to 7 days before, 6% payment fee kept.
- Deposit and card are shown offer by offer behind the “?”; a physical credit card may be required.
- Granada: cameras and bollards close whole districts; the hotel needs your plate before you enter.
Every figure comes from pages read on 6 October 2026. Prices move daily: read them as a dated reading, not an offer.
What car hire in Andalusia costs: prices from Málaga and Seville
On its Málaga page Localrent shows a monthly average with no unit; we read it as a price per day, in euros.
| Month | Average per day | Month | Average per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | €19 | July | €36 |
| February | €23 | August | €29 |
| March | €28 | September | €27 |
| April | €33 | October | €31 |
| May | €35 | November | €26 |
| June | €31 | December | €24 |
July, at €36, is about 89% dearer than January (36 ÷ 19 = 1.89). A week costs 7 × 36 = €252 in July and 7 × 31 = €217 in October: a €35 gap. According to Localrent, demand in Spain peaks in April (77%) and bottoms out in November (49%).
For Seville, Localrent gives prices from €15 in low season (July, August, November to February) and €25 to €30 in high season. The same page mentions summer heat up to 40°C; to pick your dates, see when to visit Andalusia.
ADAC’s portal showed, on 6 October 2026 (04:48), starting prices at Málaga airport from €30.94 (Europcar) to €61.20 (Sixt) a day, with full cover and no excess included, but with no rental dates. To see prices for your own dates: check car hire prices in Spain for your dates.
Fuel comes on top. Super 95 cost €1.940 a litre (European Commission, week of 28 September 2026). At an assumed 6 litres per 100 km, Málaga–Seville (210 km) works out at 210 × 0.06 × €1.940 ≈ €24, and the loop Málaga–Granada–Córdoba–Seville–Málaga (130 + 160 + 143 + 210 = 643 km) at ≈ €75. The full total is in the one-week Spain trip budget.
Where and how to book: portal, big brands or direct
Localrent is a booking portal, not a hire company: under its terms, questions about the condition of the cars go to the hire company, whose details arrive by email after booking.
| Route | What the page says | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Portal (Localrent) | 15 to 20% advance; the voucher fixes the final price | The “?”: deposit, insurance, card |
| Big brands at the airport (ADAC) | Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, Sixt; credit card, no cash deposit | Prices without dates |
| Direct with the hire company | The European Consumer Centre Germany advises local firms over comparison sites (July 2025) | Direct prices not surveyed |
Can you trust the portal? On Trustpilot, Localrent stood on 6 October 2026 at 4.6 out of 5 with 5,320 reviews, 86% five-star, 5% one-star. The one- and two-star reviews on the page that day concern insurance refused after a claim, sums asked for at the desk, and cars that differed from the booking or were in poor condition: the points in the checklist below.
Offers for Málaga, Seville and Granada sit side by side in the comparison of car hire companies in Spain, sorted by price including delivery.

Pick-up: in Málaga, delivery to the centre, handover at the airport or at the office, sometimes at the hotel; in Seville, office, hotel, SVQ airport or Santa Justa station. Returning the car in another city is possible; delivery there may be charged (tooltip by the price). Give your flight number. Book early: in high season the choice narrows, and ADAC advises several months ahead for Málaga.

Deposit, credit card and insurance: the lines that matter
The deposit is blocked or paid at pick-up; the excess is yours to pay if the car is damaged. Both appear offer by offer behind the “?”.
- Amount: for Spain, Localrent cites many offers with a €200 to €300 deposit or none; in Seville, cars with no deposit are said to be rare.
- Card: the terms mention a physical credit card in the main driver’s name, with some companies accepting a debit card. The pages contradict each other: Málaga “almost impossible” without a card, Granada “such offers exist”. The voucher is what counts.
- Outside standard insurance: wheels, undercarriage, windscreen, interior. After an accident, tell the hire company at once and get a police report, or the cover lapses. Paved roads only: on a track, the insurance does not apply.
The sum before you click: put two offers of the same class side by side, one with standard cover and one extended. The price difference per day times your days is the price of the better cover; compare it with the excess. We give no “typical” amount, because we cannot source one. The European Consumer Centre Germany warns of extra insurance pushed at the desk and items added without consent: voucher, contract and invoice must list the same lines.
Fuel: “same level”, “full-to-full” and the full-to-empty trap
The contract counts, not the slogan. For Spain, Localrent asks you to return the car with the level you collected it with: if there is less you pay the difference at the hire company’s rate; if there is more you get nothing back. Collect it full, return it full: “full-to-full”.
ADAC calls full-to-full the usual practice; some companies sell a refuelling service. With “full-to-empty” you pay for the first tank at pick-up: according to mietwagen-check.de it is usually dearer, and a service fee often comes on top.

Petrol stations are few on minor roads, says Localrent. Photograph the fuel gauge and the odometer at pick-up.
Old towns with restricted access: ZBE, cameras and hotels
Two things get confused: the low-emission zone (ZBE) follows the DGT’s environmental label, while the old-town zones follow the right of access.
The ZBE rarely catches a hire car. Label C goes, per the DGT, to petrol cars from January 2006 and diesels from September 2015; for Seville Localrent mentions cars no more than five years old, so at least C (our deduction). Ask for the “etiqueta ambiental” before paying.
- Málaga: since 30 November 2025, vehicles with no label that are not domiciled in Málaga are excluded (city hall); extension to label B, planned for 30 November 2026, is in limbo after a court ruling that is not final; cameras and fines continue (motor16, 13 and 16 August 2026). Fine: €200, or €100 within 20 days.
- Granada: ZBE since 1 October 2025: labels B, C, ECO and 0 may enter, and any vehicle with its tax domicile in Granada (Motorpasión); fine €200, €100 if paid quickly.
- Seville: the ZBE covers only Isla de la Cartuja (Mon–Fri, 7:00–19:00); a January 2026 agreement would limit fines to high-pollution days (not adopted at the time).

In Granada the bollards are the problem, not the label. The city’s mobility centre lists the Albaicín, Sacromonte, Carrera del Darro, Realejo, Recogidas and the centre as zones closed to private traffic by bollards and number-plate cameras, over 136 hectares. Hotel guests count as hotel residents, but each hotel has been cleared for only some checkpoints: ask before you travel, and give the hotel your plate before you pass a checkpoint, or a fine may follow. You cannot reach the Alhambra by car from the centre, only via the A-44, the A-395 and Avenida Santa María de la Alhambra to the car park. The city’s advice: park at the hotel, then walk or take the bus.

In Seville, Localrent cites “Zonas de Tráfico Limitado” requiring permits (red circular signs) and advises a compact car in the narrow one-way streets. In 2022 the city announced cameras for the Casco Antiguo and Triana, with hotel guests among those entitled (elDiario.es, 19 July 2022). The city’s official page could not be opened on 6 October 2026: only your hotel can confirm today’s position. To choose a district: where to stay in Seville.
Tolls, parking and routes: what counts on the road
Most Andalusian motorways are toll-free, according to ADAC. The exception is the AP-7 on the Costa del Sol (Calahonda, San Pedro de Alcántara and Manilva barriers): from June to September 2026, Fuengirola–Manilva cost €19.55 against €12 in low season (El Debate, 2 June 2026). The A-7 running alongside is free, according to Wikipedia.

From Málaga airport, ADAC gives Granada at 130 km (about 1 h 40), Córdoba at 170 km (1 h 50) and Marbella at 50 km (40 min); Seville–Málaga is 210 km (2 h 6) according to mejoresrutas.com. To see which cities fit into a week: the one-week Andalusia road trip itinerary; the white villages have their own article. Which car suits mountain roads and narrow lanes is in the checklist below.
Parking: in Seville, according to Localrent, light blue (MAR) is 1 hour maximum, blue 2 hours, green 3 hours; paid on weekdays (9:00–13:30 and 16:30–20:00) and Saturday mornings, free on Sundays and public holidays. No car-park tariff: we could not source an up-to-date one.
Before you pay: the checklist
Under Localrent’s terms the voucher fixes the final price, extras and insurance included. This should be right before you pay:
- Total price for the whole period, including delivery and return in another city.
- Deposit, insurance and card type behind the “?”.
- Fuel rule: same level, no paid refuelling service.
- Car: small and compact for old-town lanes (Localrent, Seville and Granada pages); for mountains an engine of at least 1.4 litres (Seville page), 1.6 to 2 litres for the Sierra Nevada (Granada page).
- Age and licence: in Seville, 22 years and 1 year of driving, the widest choice from 26; licence valid to the end of the rental, copies refused. GOV.UK says a UK photocard licence can be used in Spain.
- Cancellation: free up to 7 days before, or 24 hours before with “Free cancellation”; 6% kept, advance kept on a no-show.
- Plate to the hotel if it sits in a restricted-access zone.
At the desk, photograph the car from every side and have damage noted in the report; on return, ask for a signed protocol. When everything checks out, open the offer for your dates and go through the lines above.
