Marrakech airport transfer: what really works for the medina and your riad

By the Moris Insider team·7 October 2026·8 min read

From Marrakech Menara airport (RAK) to the medina you have four options: a taxi with a ticket from the official counter, bus 19, a ride-hailing app, or a transfer booked in advance. The counter taxi costs roughly 100–150 MAD by day according to 2026 guides, with 50% added at night; the bus costs 30 MAD; the transfer starts at $24 to $29 per vehicle and should be booked at least 16 hours ahead. None of them usually takes you to the door of your riad: the last stretch is mostly on foot from a medina gate. Pitfall number one is the taxi taken without a ticket, where drivers quote 150–200 MAD.

The key numbers at a glance

Every figure was read on 6 October 2026 on the pages cited: a snapshot, not a price list.

The rule of thumb: alone or as a couple, by day, with light luggage, the counter taxi or the bus are cheaper. At night, with children, with a lot of luggage, or on a first trip to Morocco, the pre-booked transfer has a case, not because of the price but because the fare and the meeting point are settled before you land.

Prices side by side

Taxi and bus: guides from January to September 2026 (notably nmorocco.com, updated 13 September 2026). Transfer: the pages of the provider Kiwitaxi. Several of the guides, including marrakechtaxi.com and kechtransfer.com, sell transfers themselves, so read their numbers with that caveat.

Checked on 6 October 2026. Taxi and bus: guides from January to September 2026; transfer: starting price on the provider’s pages. A snapshot, not a price list.

The transfer is not the cheapest way: marrakechtaxi.com converts 100–150 MAD to about €9–14, and Kiwitaxi’s German page shows from €27, so roughly two to three times the daytime counter price. And the taxi figures scatter: taxibambino.com gives 70–100 MAD by day, airporttransferportal.com (April 2026) prints no dirham amount at all. We found no official table that can be read online.

The taxi: counter ticket, night rate and the trap before it

Since May 2023, according to the Moroccan press, there has been a single taxi counter called Kech.Cab, set up with the national airports authority ONDA. After baggage claim you order your taxi there and prepay by card or in cash, and you get a ticket showing the taxi number and your place in the queue (Barlamane, 13 May 2023). The authorities set prices in seven distance zones: according to Bladi, from 100 MAD under 3 km up to 160 MAD for 13–15 km, plus counter fees. The medina is 6–7 km away, so in the 5–7 km band (120 MAD in that list); 2026 guides write 100–150 MAD. The amount on your ticket is what counts; the level of the counter fee does not appear in any source we could read.

At night a 50% surcharge applies: nmorocco.com counts 100 MAD by day and 150 MAD at night, from 8 pm according to nmorocco.com and taxibambino.com, from 10 pm according to marrakechtaxi.com. A petit taxi carries three people at most, a grand taxi up to six (lespetitesexperiences.com, 12 December 2025): a party of four with suitcases needs a grand taxi.

The trap sits before the ticket: anyone who gets into a taxi at the exit without one negotiates the price. taximarocaeroport.com (6 September 2026) writes that drivers commonly quote 150–200 MAD for the medina although the meter would give 70–100 MAD. So: get the ticket at the counter, check destination and amount, and get into the taxi the ticket names. Other first-trip traps are collected in our guide to safety and practical tips for a first trip to Morocco.

Bus 19 and ride-hailing apps: cheap, or uncertain

Line 19 of the operator ALSA links the airport to Guéliz (Place du 16 Novembre), Jemaa el-Fna square and the train station. A ticket costs 30 MAD (nmorocco.com and passportandstamps.com give 50 MAD return, both with cash payment on board); the ride takes 25–45 minutes, with a bus every 20 to 30 minutes.

On times the sources contradict each other: the last bus runs at about 9:30 pm according to nmorocco.com (updated 13 September 2026) and visitmarrakech.com, at 11:30 pm according to passportandstamps.com. Marrakech is missing from the alsa.ma home page (6 October 2026), and we found no official timetable. If you land after 9 pm, do not count on the bus; it suits one traveller, by day, with a backpack and a riad close to Jemaa el-Fna.

According to kechtransfer.com, Uber has been back in Marrakech since 27 November 2025, with licensed operators only; Bolt started in April 2026. At the airport, marrakechtaxi.com (26 March 2026) and ismytaxi.com report friction with petit-taxi drivers, pickup points away from the terminal and delays of 30–60 minutes; both sell transfers and we found no neutral source. Even with an app you are dropped near the medina gates.

The last stretch: gate, alley, riad

This applies to every option: cars do not enter the alleys of the medina. Kiwitaxi writes on its Menara airport page: where vehicle access is limited (parts of the medina are named explicitly), the driver drops you at the nearest accessible point. Common drop-off points are Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour, Bab Agnaou or Jemaa el-Fna; the walk afterwards is 200–500 metres over uneven cobbles according to nmorocco.com, 5–15 minutes according to marrakechtaxi.com.

In practice: ask your riad before booking which gate to get out at and whether a porter waits (according to kechtransfer.com, a porter or the staff usually walk guests in), and give the driver the riad’s name and phone number. How long the last leg is also depends on location: see our guide to where to stay in Marrakech, medina or Guéliz.

The pre-booked transfer: what the booking page shows

On Kiwitaxi’s page for Menara airport on 6 October 2026 the starting prices were: Marrakech from $29 (about 7 km, 15 minutes), train station from $27 (10 km). The FAQ text says from $24, the German page from €27. Prices are per vehicle, not per person, with no meter and no seasonal surcharge; according to the FAQ, tolls and standard luggage are included. What counts is the amount you see for your vehicle class before you pay.

Three things neither a taxi nor a bus gives you. The price is known before the flight. The driver waits at the exit of the arrivals area, after passport control and baggage claim, holding a sign with your name. And waiting time is included: 90 minutes after the scheduled arrival time according to the help page (the Menara page counts from landing; we go with the stricter version); if the delay is under 30 minutes the driver adjusts, beyond that you let them know.

There are 14 classes; Economy and Comfort each take four people and three suitcases, the Minivan four and four, the Minibus seven and seven. Standard vehicles should be booked at least 16 hours ahead, Premium and minibuses of 10 seats or more 24 hours ahead. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup according to the Menara page (the help page says 16 hours for standard classes; plan on 24), and you pay online by card or Apple Pay, in dollars or euros. Child seats cost extra and must be booked, otherwise the driver may refuse the ride.

The route and class can be checked in advance: see the transfer from Marrakech airport to your accommodation. The total price appears before you pay.

Is the provider reliable? The reviews

An independent platform says more than a company’s own marketing. On 6 October 2026 Kiwitaxi stood at 4.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 1,089 reviews: 78% five stars and 16% just one star. A little over three in four are very satisfied, about one in six plainly not; the provider replies to 97% of negative reviews, typically within a week.

The complaints are mostly drivers who do not show up or arrive very late, and poor communication at big airports; the praise goes to simple booking, clean vehicles and help with luggage. These reviews cover all of the provider’s destinations, not only Marrakech; its own figures (2,177 transfers to and from Menara since 2018, over 300 vetted drivers) could not be checked independently.

The risk can be reduced: enter the right flight number, save the voucher from the confirmation e-mail offline, note the dispatcher’s phone number (the help page says it is e-mailed one day before) and call it if the delay exceeds 30 minutes. And do not get into another taxi: according to the help page there is then no refund, whereas if the driver fails to show up the money is returned.

Who should choose what?

Booking in advance makes sense if you land at night or very early, travel with children or a lot of luggage, are four people (a petit taxi takes only three) or want the price before the flight. The counter taxi is enough alone or as a couple, by day, with light luggage; the bus fits if you stay near Jemaa el-Fna and carry just a backpack.

Back to the airport, and onward

On the way back the meeting point is what matters. For a hotel the driver waits in the lobby according to the help page, with 15 minutes included; for a riad, agree a gate as the meeting point with the house and enter name and phone number when booking. The same route can be booked in the other direction: transfer from your accommodation to Marrakech airport. Plan generously: the 15–25 minutes apply without traffic jams. If you are travelling straight on, Kiwitaxi shows Essaouira from $102 (178 km) from the airport; the rest of the trip is laid out in our one-week Morocco itinerary.

Before you pay: the checklist

  1. Flight number and time: enter the right flight number and set the pickup to the scheduled arrival.
  2. Vehicle: count people and suitcases (Economy and Comfort: 4 people, 3 suitcases; Minivan: 4 and 4).
  3. Address: the riad with its name, phone number and the gate where you get out.
  4. Cancellation: count on 24 hours, book the child seat, mention bulky items in the comment field.
  5. Voucher and phone: save the voucher offline, note the dispatcher’s phone number (e-mailed one day before).

Anyone arriving alone, by day and with light luggage takes the taxi with a ticket. Everyone else can see the vehicle class and total price on the provider’s page for Menara airport before paying. The transfer as a line in the overall budget appears in our ten-day Morocco budget.
