To rent a car in Yucatán you need liability insurance under Mexican law — and it is often the very thing missing from the price comparison sites show. As of 6 October 2026, Localrent listed cars in Cancún for 9 to 23 October from $42.03 to $131.48 a day, and guides add $15 to $30 a day when the insurance is not included. At booking you pay only 15 to 20%, the rest when you collect the keys: before paying, check what the price includes, and the excess and deposit.
The essentials before you book (as of 6 October 2026)
According to Localrent, intercity buses do not reach every destination in Mexico; that is where a car earns its keep. What to know:
- Liability insurance is compulsory. The federal roads law requires it; in Yucatán the driver personally must be insured (German Foreign Office).
- The comparison-site price often leaves it out: guides quote $15 to $30 a day extra.
- Localrent in Cancún, 9 to 23 October 2026: $42.03 to $131.48 a day ($588.42 to $1,840.72 for 14 days).
- 15 to 20% deposit at booking, the balance when you collect the car.
- Mérida–Cancún toll: 675 MXN (about €33); the free road runs through villages full of topes.
- No night driving, and slow down before every village.
Advertised price, real price: compulsory liability insurance
The price that lures you on a comparison site is the price you will pay only if Mexican liability insurance is inside it.
On the law: article 63 Bis of the federal roads law (Ley de Caminos, Puentes y Autotransporte Federal) requires every vehicle on federal roads and bridges to carry insurance covering damage to third parties (text read on 6 October 2026 on leyco.org). According to Germany’s Foreign Office, in many states, Yucatán included, the driver personally must also hold liability insurance; fines up to seizure of the vehicle are possible. The ADAC says German car insurance generally does not cover Mexico.

Over 14 days, liability cover at $20–30 a day (guides say $15 to $30; we found no official tariff) adds $280 to $420, about €248 to €373. In Cancún all ten Localrent cars carry the same grid: minimum and basic coverage “free of charge”, full coverage “additional fee”, with no explanation of what each tier contains. Open the “?” icon before paying the deposit and check that liability is named; if the excess and the security deposit are not shown, ask the rental firm.

The prices: ten cars at Localrent in Cancún
On 6 October 2026, Localrent listed ten new cars in Cancún, unlimited mileage and instant booking, for 9 to 23 October (14 days).
| Model | Gearbox | Per day | 14 days | In euros |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renault Kwid | manual | $42.03 | $588.42 | ≈ €522 |

| Kia Rio | automatic | $50.23 | $703.22 | ≈ €624 |
| MG 5 | automatic | $58.26 | $815.64 | ≈ €724 |
| Volkswagen T-Cross | automatic | $61.08 | $855.12 | ≈ €759 |
| Chevrolet Tracker | automatic | $61.08 | $855.12 | ≈ €759 |
| Hyundai Creta | automatic | $102.05 | $1,428.70 | ≈ €1,268 |

| Chevrolet Captiva | automatic, 7 seats | $131.48 | $1,840.72 | ≈ €1,633 |
$42.03 × 14 days = $588.42, about €522. A Hyundai Creta at $102.05 a day costs more than double a Renault Kwid: an automatic gearbox or seven seats weigh more than the badge. Deposit, card, licence: what to have in hand
The advance is not the deposit. At booking Localrent asks for 15 to 20% of the rental price by card; you pay the balance in Mexico to the rental firm. The security deposit is a third amount; how it is held and returned is stated at booking and on the voucher.
A “No credit card” filter finds firms that accept a debit card or cash; otherwise a physical embossed credit card in the main driver’s name may be required. Benchmarks from guides: $500 to $2,000 deposit, $1,000 to $3,000 excess.
Bring a driving licence, a passport and the voucher. The licence must be valid until the end of the rental and use Latin script; copies and digital licences are refused. The ADAC finds a German licence sufficient and also recommends the international permit; GOV.UK says UK photocard licences are accepted, while paper licence holders may need the 1926 International Driving Permit.
Why book ahead, and how to cancel
You pick place and dates, add insurance and extras, then pay 15 to 20% by card. The voucher emailed afterwards fixes the final price.
Why not wait for the counter: prices move with the date (the billiger-mietwagen.de barometer for Yucatán shows a median search price of €33.55 a day for October 2026, €61.87 for January 2027 and €65.58 for August 2027), and you can cancel without penalty up to 7 days before (24 hours with “Free cancellation”), the advance coming back within 14 days minus a 6% payment fee. On $588.42 the advance is $88.26 to $117.68; if you do not show up, it is kept.
Pick-up is at the airport (Cancún is one of five airports Localrent lists), the rental firm’s office, in the city or at the bus station; give your flight number so a delay is noticed. For a hand-over in Cancún, open the search with pick-up at Cancún airport.

Dropping the car in Mérida? On 6 October 2026 only the Cancún city page answered at Localrent (Mérida, Tulum, Valladolid and Playa del Carmen returned an error): check the drop-off place in the search before building a one-way route. To see where a car pays off, read our two-week road trip itinerary.
Topes: trap number one
Topes are speed bumps, and nothing like ours: according to Localrent, large concrete or metal bumps are everywhere, on main roads, in villages and before pedestrian crossings, and warning signs are not always present. The ADAC calls them treacherous and often hard to spot.

Under Localrent’s conditions standard insurance does not cover wheels, undercarriage, windscreen or interior, and a tope taken too fast hits wheels and undercarriage. Get written confirmation of whether full coverage (“additional fee”) includes them. Localrent quotes 40 to 60 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h outside.
Petrol stations: pump at zero, cash, card never leaves your hands
There is no self-service: an attendant fills the tank. Localrent advises branded stations and warns that small stations away from tourist routes can dilute fuel or short-fill.

The display must read zero before pumping. Payment is mostly cash; cards are taken mainly at larger stations, and the terminal should be brought to your car: do not hand over your card. Profeco advises asking for fuel in litres rather than pesos (Informador, 10 January 2025). National average on 6 October 2026 (Infobae, CNE and Profeco data): Magna 23.699 MXN a litre (about €1.17), Premium 28.598 MXN (about €1.41).
An example at 7 litres per 100 km (an assumption): Cancún–Chichén Itzá, about 200 km according to Localrent, 400 km return, 28 litres × 23.699 = 663.57 MXN, about €33. Return the car with the fuel level you started with; a shortfall is charged at the rental firm’s rate, a surplus is not refunded.
Toll, free road and night: which routes to pick
“Cuota” is the toll road, “Libre” the free road, “Alto” means stop. On motorway 180D the toll for a car is 248 MXN from Mérida to Valladolid and 427 MXN from Valladolid to Cancún: 675 MXN in all, about €33 (Heraldo de México Yucatán, 7 August 2026; ECB, €1 = 20.2217 MXN).
The free road costs nothing but runs through villages, hence through topes. At night the sum reverses: Localrent advises toll motorways, better lit and regularly patrolled, and Germany’s Foreign Office warns of attacks on intercity trips at night and away from toll motorways.

Plan long drives for daytime. At a police check, show your licence, passport and rental agreement; according to the Foreign Office, traffic police may not take cash or card payments. More in our article on safety in Mexico.
Other traps, and how to avoid them
- Paved roads only (Localrent): a dirt track to a cenote falls outside the conditions; see the best cenotes in Yucatán.
- Accident: tell the rental firm and obtain a police report, otherwise the insurance is cancelled; deliberate damage or neglect is not covered either.
- Parking: guarded car parks, keep the ticket; regular break-ins into rental cars (Foreign Office): nothing valuable inside. A compact car for Chichén Itzá, where spaces fill fast.
- Children: rules are set by each state; mostly a child seat or booster in the rear under 12 years or 150 cm (Localrent).

Reviews: what ratings of Localrent show
Localrent is an intermediary: questions about the condition of the cars go to the rental firm concerned (contact in the confirmation email). On Trustpilot on 6 October 2026: 4.6 out of 5, 5,322 reviews, 790 of them in twelve months; 86% give five stars, 5% give one. Praised: quick pick-up, helpful staff, clean cars. Criticised: an insurance dispute after damage, mechanical faults. These figures cover the whole brand, not Mexico alone.
Before you pay: the checklist
- Is liability cover named in the offer (“?” icon)?
- Excess, deposit, and when the deposit comes back?
- Wheels, undercarriage, glass, interior covered? What does full coverage cost?
- Embossed credit card or debit card: does yours qualify?
- Pick-up place, time and flight number right?
- Cancellation: 7 days, or 24 hours with “Free cancellation”?
- Photos or video at hand-over, wheels included (Profeco recommends a detailed check).
- Is the firm’s contract registered with Profeco (public register of adhesion contracts)?
If these points check out, you can open the rental car offer for your dates in Mexico; the balance is only paid when you collect the keys. For two weeks, see also our two-week road trip budget.
