From Faro Airport to Albufeira, Vilamoura or Lagos, three options hold up: the direct bus, a taxi and a transfer booked in advance. The bus is cheapest but runs rarely: in the 2026 summer timetable the last direct Vamus coach to Albufeira leaves at 20:15 and the last to Lagos at 18:15; in winter only two or three a day remain. For taxis, an estimate based on the previous legal tariff (a new national tariff has applied since 1 October 2026, according to the press) gives €41 to €49 to Albufeira, €30 to €36 to Vilamoura and €87 to €104 to Lagos, tolls on top. A pre-booked transfer was shown on 6 October 2026, in the Comfort class, from $44 to Vilamoura, $50 to Albufeira and $85 to Lagos, per vehicle. Trap no. 1 is in none of the three options but in the timetable: land late and there is no direct Vamus coach left.
The essentials in numbers
At Faro the choice is between the direct bus, a taxi and a transfer booked in advance. Values were checked on 6 October 2026 on the pages cited; they change with the date and the season.
- Drive time: Vilamoura 23 km, about 25 minutes; Albufeira 35 km, about 30 minutes; Lagos 85 km, about 1 h 10 (transfer-provider pages).
- Direct bus: Aerobus 56 to Albufeira (40–45 minutes) and Lagos (nearly 2 h), last summer departure at 20:15; line 55 to Vilamoura (41–51 minutes).
- Taxi (estimate on the previous tariff, four seats): by day €41 (Albufeira), €30 (Vilamoura), €87 (Lagos); at night and at weekends €49, €36 and €104; tolls extra.
- Pre-booked transfer (Comfort class, 4 people): $50 to Albufeira, $44 to Vilamoura, $85 to Lagos, per vehicle, with 90 minutes of waiting included.
- Trap no. 1: the last Vamus coach, at 20:15 for Albufeira, 18:15 for Lagos and 19:20 for Vilamoura; in winter only two or three a day.
The rule: alone or as a pair, travelling light and landing before late afternoon, the bus wins. In the evening, in winter, with children, golf clubs or four people, a pre-booked transfer is better: the price is known before you fly, and the driver waits at the exit with a sign bearing your name.
The comparison in one table
By the A22 motorway, an airport information site gives 26 km and 27 minutes to Vilamoura, 45 km and 37 minutes to Albufeira, 91 km and 59 minutes to Lagos. The options side by side:
| Option | Albufeira | Vilamoura | Lagos |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct bus (Aerobus 56, line 55) | €11 · 40–45 min · last bus 20:15 | 41–51 min · stop is not at the marina | nearly 2 h · €17 · last direct bus 18:15 |
| Taxi (estimate, 4 seats, weekday day / night and weekend) | €41 / €49 + €3.10 toll | €30 / €36, no toll | €87 / €104 + €10.40 toll |
| Train + city bus 16 | Albufeira-Ferreiras station is 6–8 km from town | no station | Faro–Lagos 1 h 45 and €7.30, over 2 h with bus 16 |
| Pre-booked transfer (Comfort class, 4 people) | $50 · about 30 min | $44 · about 25 min | $85 · about 1 h 10 |
Bus, train and taxi are in euros, the transfer in US dollars, as on the source pages: we convert nothing by hand. To place the trip in your overall costs, see our budget for one week in Portugal.
Bus and train: the Aerobus 56, line 55 and bus 16
The Aerobus 56 (Vamus Algarve) links the airport directly with Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos. According to the summer timetable (1 May to 31 October 2026, published by algarvebus.info on 28 April), it leaves the airport at 08:30, 09:30, 11:15, 12:30, 14:30, 16:00 and 18:15; the 20:15 service, line 57, stops at Portimão, not Lagos. Allow 40–45 minutes to Albufeira and nearly two hours to Lagos. From 1 November to 30 April only two or three departures remain. Comparison sites also list long-distance coaches (Rede Expressos, ALSA, FlixBus) stopping at the airport, to Albufeira for $6–10 on 5 October: times vary, so check before buying.

A ticket costs €11 to Albufeira and €17 to Lagos according to the Vamus fare grid reproduced under the timetable; you pay in cash on board, at the ticket machine at the stop or in the Vamus app. Albufeira bus station is 1.5–1.6 km from the town centre: you will need a taxi for the last stretch.
For Vilamoura, line 55 leaves at 08:30, 10:30, 14:30, 15:30, 17:30 and 19:20. It stops on Avenida Engenheiro João Meireles, not at the marina or the casino, and runs at weekends only from 1 May to 31 October.
City bus 16 reaches Faro bus station in 20 minutes for €2.25–€2.85, depending on the source. There is no station at the airport: Faro station is 6 km away, the Faro–Lagos train takes 1 h 45 for €7.30, and Albufeira-Ferreiras station is 6–8 km from the town. To Lagos, the train takes well over two hours door to door.
Taxi, Uber and Bolt: tariff, supplements, tolls
Taxis wait at the rank under the canopy at the arrivals exit. The previous legal tariff (as shown by the airport information site on 6 October 2026): €3.25 minimum, €0.94 per km on weekdays from 06:00 to 21:00, €1.13 at night, at weekends and on public holidays; the boot cost €1.60 per trip. The A22 toll was paid by the passenger, including the empty return. Tariff reform: a new national taxi tariff (AMT regulation 717/2026) has applied since 1 October 2026, according to the Portuguese press: €2.00 flag-fall instead of €3.25, pricing by kilometre and minute, luggage supplement abolished, €0.80 for a telephone booking. Our estimates still rest on the old tariff; the meter may show a different amount.

On that basis, an airport information site that also sells transfers estimates, for four seats: Albufeira (Oura) €41 by day and €49 at night or at weekends, plus a €3.10 toll; Vilamoura €30 and €36, no toll; Lagos €87 and €104, plus a €10.40 toll. A 2026 guide instead quotes €60–70 for Albufeira, with 20% supplements that stack. No official table settles it: ask for the price before you get in, or check that the meter is running.
Uber and Bolt serve the airport: the same guide cites about €30 to Albufeira, but prices rise and drivers get scarce at peak times (16:00–19:00) and in high season.
The pre-booked transfer: what the booking page shows
A private transfer is a car with a driver, priced per vehicle. On Kiwitaxi’s route pages from Faro Airport, the Comfort class (4 people, 3 suitcases) was shown on 6 October 2026 at $50 to Albufeira, $44 to Vilamoura and $85 to Lagos; the minivan (4 people, 4 suitcases) at $56, $51 and $99; the 7-seat minibus at $62, $51 and $115. The text of the same pages quotes lower “from” prices ($45, $41 and $78): what matters is the price of your class, shown before you confirm.
According to the page, the price is per vehicle and usually does not depend on the day or the time, except on major holidays or during events. Possible supplements: an extra stop, a detour, waiting beyond the included time, a change of class; tolls are not on that list. Included is 90 minutes of waiting at the airport after the scheduled arrival time. The driver meets you at the arrivals exit, after baggage claim, with a sign bearing your name; if your flight is under 30 minutes late, the driver adjusts; beyond that, call the contact number in your booking.
Cancellation is free up to 16 hours before pickup (24 hours for higher classes), with a refund in 5–7 banking days. You pay online, in full or, depending on the route, with a deposit and the balance in cash to the driver. Child seats cost extra; golf clubs, bicycles and prams go in the comment field.
Who is it for? Late arrivals, families, golfers and groups. For four people, four Aerobus tickets to Albufeira come to about €44, the same order as the $50 for the Comfort class; alone, the bus stays cheaper. If you choose this option, you can book your transfer from Faro Airport and see the vehicle class before you pay.
Albufeira, Vilamoura, Lagos: which option for which destination
Albufeira is spread out: the taxi table distinguishes Oura (€41) from Páteo (€47). The Aerobus is cheapest but ends at the bus station, far from the beach; a transfer drops you at your hotel. To choose your beach, see the most beautiful beaches of the Algarve.

Vilamoura is the shortest run: 25 minutes, a taxi estimated at €30–36 with no toll, and bus 55 does not go to the marina. With golf clubs, mention the bag in the comment field.

Lagos is where the bus loses: nearly two hours, last departure at 18:15. The taxi is estimated at €87–104 plus a €10.40 toll; the transfer was shown below that, at $85 in the Comfort class. The Faro–Lagos route page shows every class. For several bases, see our 5-day Algarve itinerary; with a rental car there is no transfer at all (renting a car in Portugal: motorways and tolls).

Can you trust a booking made in advance? The reviews
On Trustpilot, Kiwitaxi showed 4.3 out of 5 on 6 October 2026 from 1,089 reviews, 78% of them five-star and 16% one-star: more than four customers in five are satisfied, about one in six clearly is not. Praise: easy booking, punctual drivers, clean cars. Complaints: drivers who do not show up or are very late, child seats not provided, support that is hard to reach. The provider’s “3,500 transfers since 2018” are its own figures, which we could not verify. If the driver does not turn up, its help page promises a refund.
The traps and how to avoid them
- The last bus. Check the day and the season: in winter only two or three departures remain, and line 55 stops running at weekends.
- The wrong stop. Albufeira bus station is far from the centre, bus 55 far from the marina: count the last stretch with suitcases.
- The meter. Since the reform (1 October 2026, according to the press) it counts kilometres and minutes; the old boot supplement is gone, tolls come on top: settle the price before you get in.
- The transfer. Do not take another taxi without telling the provider, as your refund may suffer; waiting beyond 90 minutes or an extra stop may cost a supplement.
Before you pay: the checks
- The class: Comfort for 4 people and 3 suitcases, minivan for 4 and 4, minibus for 7 and 7.
- The flight number in full (letters and digits), and the scheduled arrival time as the pickup time.
- The address: hotel name and street in full, not just “Albufeira”.
- Cancellation: 16 or 24 hours depending on the class; the exact deadlines are in the confirmation e-mail.
- Payment: in full online, or a deposit and the balance in cash.
- Special requests (child seat, golf, pet, extra stop) in the comment field; save the driver’s number and switch your phone on as soon as you land.
