Phuket airport transfer to Patong, Kata and Khao Lak: what is actually worth paying for

By the Moris Insider team·7 October 2026·8 min read

From Phuket airport to Patong, Kata or Khao Lak you have four serious options: the Smart Bus at 100 baht, the taxi or limousine counter in the arrivals hall, Grab, and a transfer booked in advance. To Patong the sources quote roughly 500 to 1,000 baht per vehicle at the counter, the Smart Bus takes about 90 to 110 minutes, and a private transfer was listed from $34 on 6 October 2026 (Khao Lak from $54, Krabi $80). The number one trap is a price that is not fixed before you get in: there is no single price list every source relies on, and many drivers would rather leave the meter off.

The key numbers at a glance

Every figure comes from pages we read on 6 October 2026, and most carry the month they were recorded, because prices and timetables move.

Alone and travelling light, the Smart Bus is unbeatable. With several people, suitcases, children or a late landing, a transfer with a price fixed in advance wins.

The airport, the distances and the journey times

The terminals sit side by side, joined by a covered walkway (about five minutes on foot). According to Kiwitaxi, metered-taxi counters stand outside both arrivals halls.

Journey time depends less on distance than on the hour: to Patong the guides say 45 to 60 minutes, up to 90 between 4 pm and 7 pm (phuket101, March 2026; evephuket, July 2026). Closer are Kamala (28 km, about 35 minutes, from $33), Bang Tao ($33) and Mai Khao ($30). No single price list is authoritative; read these figures as ranges:

The counter taxi: meter, zone fare and the 100-baht charge

There are two counters: metered taxis, and the “Airport Limousine” counter with zone fares. On the meter, phuket101 (March 2026) gives 600 to 700 baht to Patong plus a 100-baht charge, evephuket (July 2026) 700 to 800 with the charge included, and 900 to 1,000 to Kata and Karon. The limousine counter shows fixed prices: 800 to 1,000 baht to Patong, 1,000 to 1,200 to Kata and Karon, per vehicle (evephuket; phuketserenity, July 2026; phuket101, September 2026). Trip.com (27 May 2026) quotes lower figures at the official counter: 500 to 650 baht.

The 100 baht is legitimate (according to evephuket the charge is on the airport operator’s board): it is added on top of the meter, and the sources do not say whether the zone fare includes it. The real issue is the meter itself: evephuket (August 2026) writes that most drivers do not use it and quote a flat fare, often three to four times higher. Check that it is running, photograph the fare board and pay at the counter rather than in the corridor. After midnight Trip.com mentions surcharges of 10 to 30%.

Smart Bus, shared minivan and Grab: the budget options

Phuket Smart Bus Route 1 runs via Bang Tao, Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata to Rawai; the operator shows 100 baht on phuketsmartbus.com, and according to phuket101 (May 2026) that is the fare for any stop. The stop is in front of the domestic terminal, Exit 3 on the departures level, opposite Café Amazon: if you land on an international flight, you walk to Terminal 3 first.

Departures are roughly hourly, from 8:15 am to about 11:30 pm according to two guides; the operator publishes the timetable as an image, so check it on the day. You pay in cash, by PromptPay QR, with the Rabbit card or, since January 2026, contactless with Visa or Mastercard. The limits: 90 to 110 minutes to Patong, stops rather than your hotel door, and no stop at Khao Lak or Krabi.

The shared minivan at the counter costs 180 to 200 baht per person (phuket101; phuketserenity says up to 300 and a 20 to 40 minute wait). It leaves only when full, and your hotel can be the last stop.

Grab is, according to phuket101, the only app with an approved pickup zone inside the grounds (Exit 8 at the international terminal, Exit 1 at the domestic): 750 to 1,250 baht to Patong depending on demand. Bolt (about 570 baht) and inDrive do not pick up directly at the terminal.

The pre-booked transfer: what the booking page shows

A private transfer is a car with a driver, priced per vehicle, not per person. On Kiwitaxi’s route pages, the price list shown on 6 October 2026 for a pickup on 7 October was:

Prices per vehicle in US dollars, checked on 6 October 2026 on Kiwitaxi’s route pages (pickup on 7 October). Times follow the page text; the data boxes sometimes differ.
DestinationDistance · timeComfort (4 pax, 3 bags)Minivan (4 pax, 4 bags)Minibus 7 / 10 pax

Kata Beach47–53 km · 1 h to 1 h 15$34$37$37 / $56

Krabi140–160 km · 2 h 40 to 3 h$80$80$80 / $95

The fixed price covers pickup, the ride to the exact address, taxes and tolls. The driver waits in the arrivals hall with a sign bearing your name; 90 minutes of waiting after the scheduled arrival is included. If the flight is under 30 minutes late he adjusts; beyond that you call him; after 90 minutes he may ask for an extra fee. You get his number before pickup.

For two people to Patong the counter is cheaper: 800 to 1,000 baht against $34 (the page itself converts $27 into 962 baht, about 35.6 baht to the dollar: around 1,200 baht). With four people and suitcases you need a minivan: the guides quote 800 to 1,500 baht (phuket101, evephuket) against $37, around 1,300 baht. You are buying certainty: the price known before the flight, the driver at the exit, waiting covered if the plane is late, a drop-off at the hotel door.

You book at least 16 hours ahead (24 hours for minibuses of 10 seats and up). Cancellation is free up to 16 hours before departure (24 for the larger vehicles); the exact deadline is on the voucher. Payment is by Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay, in dollars or euros, in full online or with a small deposit and the balance in cash to the driver. If you decide to book your Phuket airport transfer in advance, you see the route, the class and the total price before paying; the page opens in English, and you change the language in the menu.

Khao Lak and Krabi: why the counter rarely fits

Khao Lak is 78 to 90 km north, on the mainland; the Smart Bus does not go there. A local operator (June 2026) quotes 200 to 350 baht per person in a shared shuttle (90 to 120 minutes) and 100 to 150 baht via bus station 2 and Takua Pa (three to four hours, impractical with suitcases). Kiwitaxi shows from $54 per vehicle.

To Krabi (140 to 160 km, about three hours) the coach from bus station 2 costs from 395 to 400 baht and the shared minivan 400 to 600 baht (travelcoolplaces, 2 October 2026). Kiwitaxi’s $80 falls inside the range the same source gives for Bookaway ($72 to $111 per vehicle); with three or four people and suitcases, booking ahead wins because there is no change at the bus station. The prices to Khao Lak and Krabi from Phuket are set out by vehicle class on the page. To choose your coast, see Phuket or Krabi.

Is booking ahead reliable? The reviews

On Trustpilot, at our check on 6 October 2026, Kiwitaxi stood at 4.3 out of 5 across 1,089 reviews (226 in twelve months): 78% five stars, 16% one star. Praised: fast booking, punctual drivers, clean vehicles. Criticised: drivers who are late or do not show, contacts who cannot be reached at airports, last-minute cancellations and missing child seats. Trust Trustpilot rather than the reviews on the route page: on the Patong page only two are from Phuket (2016).

Traps at the airport, and how to avoid them

For the season, and so the traffic: best time to visit Thailand.

Before you pay: the checks

  1. Count people and suitcases: Comfort = 4 people and 3 suitcases, minivan = 4 and 4, minibus = 7 people.
  2. Enter the complete flight number (FR1870, not 1870), otherwise the driver cannot track your flight.
  3. Give the exact address: hotel name or street.
  4. Do not read the journey time from the box: for Patong it shows 2 h 10, the text says 50 to 70 minutes.
  5. Note the cancellation deadline (16 or 24 hours, see the voucher).
  6. Add the child seat: it costs extra, and without it the driver may refuse the ride.
  7. Keep the voucher offline and note the driver’s number; if he does not show, contact support first and do not get into another taxi (no refund otherwise).

If the sums work for your group, reserve your Phuket airport transfer and read the class, luggage allowance and cancellation deadline before you pay. For the rest of the trip: getting around Thailand and the three-week budget.
