Santorini excursions: what to book ahead, what to skip, and what it costs

By the Moris Insider team·7 October 2026·8 min read

Santorini has a handful of excursions worth your time, and only the caldera cruise (catamaran from $62) and a winery tour are sure bets to book ahead. As of 6 October 2026, Akrotiri costs €20 to enter, the Fira–Oia hike is free (bus back €2.20), and the sun sets in Oia at 6:55 pm on 7 October and at 5:30 pm from 26 October. Trap number one is the clock: start the hike in the afternoon and you arrive after sunset. Here is what to book, when and at what price.

The essentials before you book (as of 6 October 2026)

GetYourGuide lists more than 500 activities in Santorini, but very few decide your stay. These are the numbers to know before you book:

These figures come from pages read on 6 October 2026. Prices change daily: read them as a dated reading, not an offer.

What is worth booking ahead, and what is not

Not everything in Santorini needs a booking. The table separates what can run out or needs pickup and a small group from what you can sort out on the day:

The do-it-yourself sum. Akrotiri €20 plus two bus rides from Fira at €2.20 each = €24.40. Boat to the volcano and hot springs €15 plus €5 entry = €20. One bus to or from Oia €2.20. The short Santo Wines tour €12. Together €58.60 per person for four activities, with no meals, no trip to the harbour and no guarantee that the boat’s entry price holds for your date. A catamaran with a meal costs from $62 on its own. To see how such items fit a full budget, read the budget for ten days in Greece.

The caldera boat trip: prices, schedule and wind

Behind the words “caldera cruise” sit two products with very different prices.

Volcano boat (3 to 6 hours). The stops are Nea Kameni (the active volcano), the hot springs of Palea Kameni and, on longer trips, the island of Thirassia. CheckYeti listed trips on 6 October 2026 from €15 (3 hours) and from €18 (6 hours with Thirassia). GetYourGuide showed from $34 (3 hours) and from $31 (4 to 6 hours, reduced price). One offer’s description states that the €5 per person volcano entry is not included.

Catamaran or sailing ship with a meal (5 hours). On GetYourGuide the range starts at $62 (“Comfort Max”, leaving from Ammoudi port, about 60 minutes’ swimming at White and Red Beach according to the description, skewers) and reaches $124 (“Luxury Catamaran”, meal and open bar). A catamaran with a barbecue dinner and music costs from $84 and has a sunset option. An industry site gives €120 to €150 per person for shared sunset trips, departing between 2:30 and 3:30 pm, a little over 5 hours (daytripsfromsantorini.com, 28 July 2026). Descriptions differ in meal, drinks, boat size and timing: read those lines, not only the price.

Sunset on the water. For the evening trip the time matters: in Oia the sun sets at 6:55 pm on 7 October, 6:33 pm on 24 October and 5:30 pm from 26 October, because Greece sets its clocks back on 25 October. Check the departure time for your date on the listing.

Getting to the harbour. Depending on the offer, trips leave from Ammoudi (Oia), Vlychada or Athinios. From Fira to Athinios the KTEL bus costs €2.70 (price list of 19 May 2026); one offer’s description says €2.

Red Beach from the water. Several catamaran descriptions include a swim stop at Red Beach. That is the comfortable way: according to a guide (July 2026) the footpath has been officially closed several times after rockfalls, and a boat from Akrotiri harbour costs €5 to €8 for about 10 minutes.

Wind. There is no universal wind speed for cancellations, writes a Greek travel site: sea state, gusts, direction, vessel type, route and marine warnings decide (26 September 2025). The meltemi is typical in July and August, but windy spells also occur outside those months. Ask before booking what the replacement departure is, and do not put the trip on your last day.

To see the catamarans side by side, you can search for Santorini catamaran tours on GetYourGuide; sort by rating and read the meeting point line.

Sunset in Oia without the crowds

The classic spot is the ruined castle at the north end of Oia. According to a guide (July 2026), the walls are taken by 5:30 pm in July and August, and it advises arriving 90 minutes before sunset. For October the same guide judges it one of the best months for sunset, with few people. That is an opinion, not a headcount.

In 2026 Santorini caps cruise passengers at 8,000 a day (offthegridgetaways.com, 30 August 2026). The cap eases the daytime, but not the evening, according to our article on choosing an island. Quieter places named by guides:

If you sleep in Imerovigli or Fira you have sunset almost on your doorstep; what matters when choosing a village is in where to stay in Santorini. A caldera-view terrace in Oia should be booked weeks ahead in high season, according to the first guide.

Wineries: book a tour or go yourself?

In Santorini the vines are trained into flat baskets in the volcanic soil. To taste, you have two routes, and the price gap is large.

Directly at Santo Wines. According to santorinisecrets.com (30 July 2026, checked against the booking pages according to the site), the daily short tour costs €12 per person (about 20 minutes in the production area plus two tastings); tasting flights run from €18 to €55, four wines with snacks about €45. The winery is open daily from about 9 am to 10 pm. Walk-ins are welcome; reserve for sunset terrace tables (July to September), for the guided tour and for groups over ten.

As a tour with pickup. On GetYourGuide the page showed a guided tour of three wineries (4.5 hours, small group, pickup) from $152 instead of $169, rated 4.8 with 731 reviews, a sunset tour with Santo Wines (4 to 4.5 hours, small group) from $203, rated 4.9 with 913 reviews, and a wine museum ticket with tasting from $34. An industry site lists tours by other operators at €95 (three wineries), €105 (sunset with Santo) and €145 (food and wine), as of 28 July 2026.

Our reading: without a car, the tour pays for pickup and the ride back; with a car, Santo Wines direct costs far less, but the driver tastes nothing. To combine sunset and wine, reserve the terrace table there.

Akrotiri: entry, hours, getting there

Akrotiri is the Bronze Age city that an eruption buried under ash; a protective roof covers the dig. According to the official 2026 table of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades, entry costs €20, reduced €10.

Hours in October. Mondays and Thursdays 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. On the other days, 1 to 15 October 8:00 am to 6:30 pm (last entry 6:00 pm), 16 to 31 October 8:00 am to 6:00 pm (last entry 5:30 pm).

Time and getting there. Guides allow 60 to 90 minutes for a self-guided visit, another about two hours. The KTEL bus from Fira costs €2.20 (price list of 19 May 2026); one guide counts about ten minutes on foot from the stop to the entrance.

Call first. The site stayed closed until 11 April 2025 for roof checks after seismic activity in the Cyclades. The official page names no closing day, one guide says Tuesday: a call to +30 22860 81939 settles it before you pay for a non-refundable guided visit. To fit Akrotiri into a week, see the seven-day Cyclades itinerary.

The Fira–Oia hike: free, but plan it

In places the path is loose volcanic rock with no shade (photo titled “Footpath Oia–Thira” on Wikimedia Commons). Photo : Line Lasserre · CC BY-SA 4.0

The path along the caldera rim is about 10 to 10.5 km and takes 2.5 to 5 hours depending on pace and stops (thecommonwanderer.com; earthtrekkers.com, 27 February 2026). It needs no ticket and no reservation.

The clock trap. Leave Fira at 2:00 pm and take 5 hours and you arrive at 7:00 pm, after the sunset of 7 October (6:55 pm). From 26 October (5:30 pm) you would need to start in the morning. Better: set off in late morning, eat in Oia, wait for sunset and check the time of the last bus to Fira beforehand. When the heat eases is covered in the best time to visit Greece.

Booking on GetYourGuide: what the page shows, what reviews say

For each offer the Santorini page shows duration, tags such as “Pickup available” or “Meal included”, stars, number of reviews and a “from” price; struck-through prices show discounts.

The order is not a quality verdict. The page itself explains that it ranks by popularity, ratings, performance, availability, diversity and revenue, with no guaranteed positions. “Top pick” therefore does not mean an editorial recommendation. Sort by stars and number of reviews, and read the description to the end.

What customers write. On Trustpilot, GetYourGuide stands at 3.9 out of 5 with more than 56,600 reviews on 6 October 2026, 68% five-star and 19% one-star. Reviewers praise knowledgeable guides and a simple interface. Criticism concerns last-minute cancellations by the operator, refunds when a site closes and poorly explained meeting points.

Cancellation. The Santorini page advertises free cancellation in its title; a review dated 11 April 2026 describes it as valid up to 24 hours before the start. Does that apply to your offer? The line is on the listing, not in this article. The page also showed us prices in US dollars; in euros the amount may differ.

The traps and how to avoid them

Before you pay: the checks

Each point can be read on the offer’s page:

  1. Does the departure time fit sunset for your date (6:55 pm on 7 October, 5:30 pm from 26 October)?
  2. What is included: meal, drinks, volcano entry (€5), pickup?
  3. Where is the meeting point (Ammoudi, Vlychada, Athinios), and how do you get there (bus Fira–Athinios €2.70)?
  4. What is the cancellation deadline, and what happens if the operator cancels?
  5. Do duration and group size fit your day, without putting the hike on the same afternoon?
  6. Is the operator’s phone number saved and the voucher available offline?

If those lines are right, you can search for your trip on GetYourGuide and enter your date: you will see the price for your date, not just the entry price. For the sunset caldera cruise, it pays to decide early.
