Car rental in Iceland: prices, gravel and sand insurance, F-roads and the traps before you pay

By the Moris Insider team·7 October 2026·8 min read

For the Ring Road an ordinary car is enough in Iceland — the expense hides in what the basic insurance leaves out. On 6 October 2026 Localrent shows €71 to €87 as a monthly average, and the ADAC comparison shows headline prices from €56.95 a day at the big brands; in August 89% of the fleet is rented. The main trap is F-roads and rivers: F-roads need a 4x4 and the rental company’s approval, and according to Safetravel no insurance covers damage from a river crossing. Here is what to check before you pay.

The essentials before you book (as of 6 October 2026)

Without a car you barely reach Iceland’s sights: according to Localrent, public transport links only the main towns. These are the figures to know before booking:

Figures come from pages read on 6 October 2026; prices move daily. We convert krónur at the ECB rate of that day (€1 = ISK 137.2).

What a rental car costs in Iceland

Localrent publishes a price per month and the fleet occupancy. The page gives no unit; we read the price as a daily rate because its FAQ speaks of “from €80 to 100” in peak season.

Car rental in Iceland by month (Localrent, read on 6 October 2026)
MonthPrice shown by LocalrentFleet rented
January€7246%
February€8651%
March€8653%
April€7862%
May€8759%
June€8471%
July€7579%
August€7789%
September€7683%
October€7669%
November€7257%
December€7143%

The highest price falls in May (€87), the highest occupancy in August (89%); the page does not explain it. Table and FAQ do not quite agree either (€75 in July, “from €80 to 100” in peak season): only the total on the booking page counts. Example: a week at the August figure, 7 × €77 = €539; advance €80.85 to €107.80, balance €458.15 to €431.20 at the key handover.

For comparison, the ADAC showed on 6 October 2026 (04:49) for Enterprise, Europcar, Sixt, Avis and Hertz headline prices from €56.95 a day (small car, 7 days from €398.62), €63.31 (compact) and €70.60 (SUV), with no rental dates: headline prices, not offers.

Fuel comes on top. According to Gasvaktin (245 stations, 6 October 2026), 95 petrol averages ISK 278.6 a litre (about €2.03) and diesel ISK 320.5 (€2.34). At an assumed 7 litres per 100 km that is about €14 per 100 km on petrol, €16 on diesel. For the full budget see the one-week Iceland road trip budget.

Who rents: Localrent, Icelandic firms or big brands

Localrent is not a rental company but a booking platform for local firms: terms and insurance depend on the car.

Three ways to rent in Iceland (pages read on 6 October 2026)
RouteWhat we readWhat to watch
Localrent (platform for local firms)15 to 20% advance; mostly no deposit (Reykjavík page: up to €300); extended insurance in the base price for “nearly all” vehiclesInsurance and deposit lines (“?” icon)
Icelandic firm direct (Blue Car Rental)CDW, SCDW, gravel, theft and third-party liability in every booking; sand and ash optionalExtras only before the rental starts
Big brands (ADAC comparison)From €56.95 a day; credit card in the driver’s name for the depositHeadline price, scope of insurance

Can you trust the platform? On Trustpilot, Localrent stands on 6 October 2026 at 4.6 out of 5 from 5,320 reviews, 86% five-star and 5% one-star. Recent criticism: an insurance dispute after a claim, as told by a customer, and the condition of one vehicle (wiper blades, empty washer reservoir), two points covered here. The 4.8 out of 5 on its own site (4,509 reviews) is the brand’s own rating.

Insurance: gravel, sand and ash, and what nothing covers

In Iceland the insurance lines matter more than the rental rate. Blue Car Rental, an Icelandic company, lists these covers on its page (6 October 2026); other firms show other figures.

According to Blue Car Rental, sand damage is common mainly on the south coast, can happen all year and costs ISK 500,000 to 1,500,000 (≈ €3,640 to €10,930); without SAAP the renter pays everything. The sum: one week of SAAP = 7 × ISK 1,850 = ISK 12,950 (≈ €94); one week of LW for a small car = 7 × ISK 4,700 = ISK 32,900 (≈ €240), or 37% of a 90,000 ISK excess. These extras can only be added before the rental starts.

Rent a car in IcelandLocal rental companies on Localrent

Covered nowhere, according to Blue Car Rental and Go Car Rental (page of 8 June 2026, updated 14 July): driving off the road, negligence, wrong fuel, the interior, fines. For undercarriage, doors blown open by wind and water damage the firms differ: Go Car Rental excludes them from every package, Blue Car Rental covers them with the LW.

At Localrent the page speaks of extended insurance in the base price, but the terms exclude wheels, undercarriage, windscreen and interior; nothing on gravel, sand or ash: that line is on the vehicle page (“?” icon). As for credit-card insurance, Go Car Rental warns it often excludes gravel, F-roads, tyres and windscreens: check in writing.

F-roads, fords and the highlands: where the contract stops

According to Localrent, any car will do on Route 1. Otherwise the terms allow rental cars only on paved roads; F-roads, the unpaved tracks, need your route confirmed by the rental company and a 4x4.

Not every 4x4 will do: Safetravel names tracks for a Dacia Duster and others that need a Land Cruiser. Also worth reading: campervan or 4x4 in Iceland.

Rivers are your risk. “No insurance covers any damage of a vehicle while crossing a river”, writes Safetravel, the portal of the ICE-SAR rescue association; the repair can cost thousands of euros. Go Car Rental excludes water damage from every package, Blue Car Rental puts it in the LW: get it in writing whether a river crossing is included.

The season decides. According to Safetravel F-roads are usually closed from mid-September until June or July; ISAK says many often stay open until late autumn, and most reopen around the third week of June. Today’s status is on umferdin.is: check it before paying a 4x4 surcharge for F-roads. Off the road, ISAK cites up to ISK 500,000 (≈ €3,640) and up to two years in prison.

Wind, doors and winter tyres

According to Localrent, park so the wind hits the windscreen: gusts tear doors from your hand and damage the hinges. Above 15 m/s the page advises avoiding exposed stretches; weather and roads: vedur.is and road.is. From November to April expect snow and ice; reputable firms then fit winter tyres (Blue Car Rental), so have it confirmed. More in Iceland in winter or summer.

Collecting at Keflavík: steps, times, return

Localrent lists Keflavík airport (KEF) and Reykjavík among its pick-up points; collecting at Keflavík and returning in Reykjavík is possible. The “?” icon beside the price shows the deposit; for airport pick-up give your flight number. If the return time is later than the pick-up time, one day is added; fuel goes back at the same level, any surplus is not refunded.

Keflavík to Reykjavík takes about 40 minutes (kefairport.is). If the office is off-airport, a shuttle runs: at Lava Car Rental every 30 minutes (5 am to 6 pm), office reached about an hour after landing; between 10 pm and 5 am, self-service. Next: the 7-day Ring Road itinerary or the Golden Circle.

Before you pay: the checklist

Every point is on the vehicle page or the voucher:

  1. What excess applies to collision, gravel, sand and ash?
  2. How high is the deposit, and is your card accepted?
  3. Does the contract allow your route? F-roads: 4x4 and approval.
  4. Old enough, and licence in Latin script valid until the rental ends?
  5. Pick-up and return times that add no extra day?
  6. Cancellation: free up to 7 days before (30 for luxury cars and convertibles), 24 hours with “Free cancellation”; 6% of the amount paid is retained.

If those lines check out, you can open the offer for your travel dates. In August 89% of the fleet is rented: the fuller it is, the earlier you book.
