Where to stay on Iceland’s Ring Road: what to book, when, and what a night costs

By the Moris Insider team·7 October 2026·8 min read

Along Iceland’s Ring Road, beds are not short everywhere, but in specific places: the south-east and the east. Book those first, and only with free cancellation. According to Statistics Iceland, hotel rooms were 92.9% occupied in the South and 92.0% in the East in July 2026, and the East has only 10 hotels with 428 rooms. On 6 October 2026 Booking.com showed, for one night in July 2027 for two people, a lowest price of €117 in Reykjavík, €172 in Höfn, €182 in Egilsstaðir and €248 in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. By law a tax of 800 ISK per room per night (about €6) also applies; the page does not say whether it is already in the price.

The key numbers at a glance

Everything is checked on 6 October 2026 on the pages named: a snapshot, not a price list. Conversions use the day’s rate (€1 ≈ 137.2 ISK).

Hotel, guesthouse or holiday home: who each one suits

In August 2026 Statistics Iceland counted about 1,549,000 overnight stays: 653,000 in hotels (42%), 192,000 in guesthouses (12%) and 704,000 in other accommodation such as campsites and cottages (45%). The hotel is not the norm.

For a trip with one night in each place, a guesthouse or hotel fits: arrive, drive on, no cleaning, no bed linen. A holiday home pays off at two nights in the same place or from four people, because the price covers the whole house. Cooking for yourself saves restaurant bills: a mid-range main course costs 4,000 to 7,000 ISK according to our one-week budget.

Parking is the rule in the countryside: the “Parking” filter applies to 1,884 of the 2,028 properties Booking.com listed for Iceland on 6 October 2026. In Reykjavík, zones P1 and P2 are also paid at weekends, from 10:00 to 21:00, while P3 and P4 are paid on weekdays only (official notice of 2024; the city is reviewing the zones in 2026): ask the hotel where the car goes. For private flats and houses, the listing should carry a registration number; according to island.is, a private host may let for 90 nights a year and 2,000,000 ISK of income at most. Camping and vans have their own sums in campervan or 4x4 in Iceland; the 2026 Camping Card costs €179 for 28 nights.

Why book early: occupancy by region

Statistics Iceland publishes hotel room occupancy by region. It shows where summer gets tight.

Statistics Iceland (Hagstofa), tables of 30 September 2026, hotels only (August 2026); 2026 occupancy = rooms occupied, monthly average; “North” = Northeast plus Northwest.

The East has 10 hotels with 428 rooms, 3.3% of the country’s 12,817 hotel rooms; guesthouses are not counted (192,000 overnight stays in August). Booking.com shows the same picture: with no dates, it listed 2,028 properties for Iceland on 6 October 2026, of which 649 in the South, 507 in the Reykjavík region, 361 in the North and only 121 in the East. In Egilsstaðir, for 14 July 2027, 15 of the first 25 results carried the note “We have N left at this price”, meaning 1 to 7 rooms left.

The order to book in: the south-east and east first (Kirkjubæjarklaustur or Skaftafell, Höfn, Egilsstaðir), then Vík and Mývatn, then Akureyri, Reykjavík last. The search for accommodation across Iceland on Booking.com can be narrowed to rates with a cancellation deadline through the “Free cancellation” filter under “Reservation policy”. In winter the rush eases (January 2026: East 9.6%, South 36.5%); see Iceland in winter or summer and, for the aurora, the northern lights guide.

The route stage by stage: where the beds are

Distances come from OpenStreetMap data (OSRM, 6 October 2026), town centre to town centre, rounded to 5 km, pure driving time; the whole Ring Road is about 1,320 km. Results and prices per town are in the table of the next section.

Reykjavík, start and finish, has the most choice (59 hotels, 5,670 rooms): book it last.

The South. Reykjavík–Vík is about 190 km (2 h 50). From Vík to Höfn it is about 255 km (a little over 3 h 30) with few places between: Kirkjubæjarklaustur (about 75 km past Vík), the Skaftafell and Hof area, Hali near Jökulsárlón. Höfn is about 185 km from Kirkjubæjarklaustur. If you want to stop on the way, book these places early.

The East. Höfn–Egilsstaðir along the coast is about 265 km (around four hours); the shortcut over the Öxi pass is a gravel road according to our 7-day itinerary. The Egilsstaðir list includes, besides the 12 results in the town, properties from the surrounding area as far as Seyðisfjörður (about 27 km by road); Booking.com prints the distance on each card (“from centre” or “from Egilsstadir”): read it before you commit.

The North. Egilsstaðir–Akureyri is about 255 km (about 3 h 40), Mývatn–Akureyri about 85 km, Akureyri–Reykjavík about 380 km (5 h 30). Akureyri has choice (60 results for 14 July 2027); Mývatn is the tight spot (10).

The prices checked

For seven towns the table shows what Booking.com displayed on 6 October 2026 for one night for two people: for summer 2027 and for the night eight days away. The total row covers seven nights in Reykjavík, Vík, Höfn, Egilsstaðir, Mývatn, Akureyri and Reykjavík.

Booking.com, checked on 6 October 2026: two adults, one room, one night, sorted by price. “Results” = properties in the town itself; “5th price” = fifth-lowest price on the list.

Total, 7 nights€1,056 · €1,677€649 · €1,193

Three things stand out. July’s lowest price is 1.1 to 2.3 times October’s, with the widest gap at Mývatn (€212 against €94). After the first result the list jumps: in Vík €125 is followed by €256, and the fifth price is €357. And seven nights cost €1,056 in July 2027 at each town’s lowest price, €1,677 at the fifth price; in October 2026, €649 and €1,193.

Guides give lower orders of magnitude: Isnet (23 August 2026) quotes 15,000 ISK (≈ €109) for a guesthouse double, 25,000 ISK (≈ €182) for a hotel in Reykjavík, 20,000 ISK (≈ €146) outside the capital, 60,000 ISK (≈ €437) for a 4-star. Seven nights at 15,000 ISK come to 105,000 ISK (≈ €765), at 25,000 ISK to 175,000 ISK (≈ €1,276). That is closer to October than to July in the south-east. The tax is due on top by law (the page does not say whether Booking.com’s prices include it): 800 ISK per room per night (law 87/2011, article 2), so 5,600 ISK (≈ €41) for seven nights, 11,200 ISK (≈ €82) for two rooms and, on a campsite (400 ISK), 2,800 ISK (≈ €20).

Traps and how to avoid them

Before you pay: the checks

How reliable is the platform? On Trustpilot, Booking.com stood at 1.4 out of 5 from 128,184 reviews on 6 October 2026 (74% one star, 17% five stars). Complaints concern late refunds, bookings that could not be found on arrival and a customer service that is hard to reach. Trustpilot reflects the people who chose to write, not every stay, but the figure justifies the safeguards above: a rate with a dated deadline, the confirmation kept, a message to the property two days before.

Once the route is fixed, you can compare hotels and guesthouses in Iceland on Booking.com: south-east and east first, the rest after.
